Aarhus’ most central forest, Riis Skov, is (unsurprisingly) a highly popular destination for Aarhusians wanting to enjoy nature without straying too far from the City. Nestled in between the major radial road Grenåvej to the west and Aarhus Bay to the east, Riis Skov separates the City Centre from the affluent suburb of Risskov, named after the forest.
Riis Skov is arguably one of the most striking natural features in Aarhus. Perched on top of a hill significantly higher than the adjacent sea, the forest offers stunning views of just about anywhere. From the eastern views of the Bay and Den Permanente beach to the southern views of the City Centre and Aarhus Ø, Riis Skov really gives a special impression of “nature meeting culture” — in a good way, where the two seem to complement each other.
The forest contains a large number of paths popular among runners and walkers alike, as well as several other features attracting visitors; including the excellent (and affordable!) inn Sjette Frederiks Kro immediately up the stairs from Den Permanente, a free outdoors fitness area at the very south by Langelinieparken, as well as a hostel for anyone who wants to stay close to the city yet still be surrounded by nature.
Each spring, the forest is characterised by a distinctive, garlicky smell from the blossoming ramsons (wild garlic) covering the forest floor. This naturally turns some visitors off, while others embrace the opportunity to pick the plants for use in cooking. Try them out for a taste of original Danish ingredients — they’re quite delicious!
On a warm day (including during summer, when the strong smell has diminished), Riis Skov is absolutely one of the most pleasant places to go in all of Aarhus.
